Out with the old and in with the new

2020 is now in the history books, and 2021 has rolled in and is moving forward. Ready or not here we go.

I was doing my normal bible study a few days ago and was thinking it would be good to make a plan for 2021. I would make it a year that I work on something God was telling me to work on, rather on things I think I need to work on.

Ok, that sounds like a good idea, and I will see if God, would speak to me, thru the bible and help me to focus on a thing or two for the year. My study started in Genesis with Abraham and how he followed up on Gods direction. He didn’t do that well everyday. Much of the time he was faithful but there were a number of times he didn’t exactly follow Gods plan. This is how things go with me also, I know the plan but don’t follow the plan.

I saw some references to other passages in the new testament that I looked up. Eph. 4 29-32 really grabbed me, and I noticed that verse 32 recommended, “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” humm…. I looked at the next reference in Col. 3 12-14 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.” Moved on to 1Cor. 10 23-24, 23 I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but not everything is constructive. 24 No one should seek their own good, but the good of others.

I kept seeing that I needed to be kind and compassionate to others and to forgive them. In fact we should forgive them like God forgave me. Tough work there, and I decided I needed to think about it a little more and see if God would tell me the same thing tomorrow. I told my queen about my idea and the plan for tomorrow. Like many wives, she in her gentle way said, “so you are saying you want to fact check God” That was something to think over. I was hoping she would support me, and help me look for a loop hole or find some things that would be easier.

Day 2 I looked again, and found some more messages. Rom 12 1-2 was first on the list. “12 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” That did seem to get me to a place where I can live the way that I feel is right, but rather do conform to Gods will. 1Thess. 5 19 showed up, 19 Do not quench the Spirit. ” He seemed to be saying to transform my mind before I test Gods will, and to not keep bugging the Holy Spirit. I took those messages as my clue, to stop fact checking God.

I checked again on day 3, and got this message.

Mark 12:28-34

And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, asked him, “Which commandment is the most important of all?” Jesus answered, “The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” .

Seems the bible was telling me something each day. Day one, Love God and love others, and on Day two, God said to stop asking him the same thing, and do what I told you to do yesterday, Day 3 love God and love others.

So here is my plan for 2021

Love God and Love others.

Pray for me to be able to handle those two things.
